What does the Election of October 9th Mean for You?

The Newfoundland and Labrador Defense League will periodically post a topic for discussion based on current events in Newfoundland and Labrador. This is the one and only official blog of the NLDL.

Regarding the provincial elections and the new makeup of our government what do you see as the good, the bad and the ugly of our new political situation in the land?

Let me start. I think the dispersion of the few Liberal and NDP seats is a good thing. It does provide some opposition for regions of the province. I'm not sure though that our political system leans itself to fair voting. We have people who vote for the leader, others who vote for the party and still others who favour a candidate. All marking the same X.

One thing that is for certain is the popular vote and the number of seats show a decisive mandate for teh provincial Tories.

I like the idea of this sort of open discussion, especially sponsored by NLDL as it is a non-partisan (or multi-partisan) group.

Personally I would have been a little more comfortable with a slightly stronger opposition today but I would have preferred that opposition to be the NDP.

It's not that I support the ideology of the NDP over the Liberals or Conservatives, but during the last 4 years the Liberal opposition has simply been too negative. THe NDP on the other hand were willing to make comments about good inititive of government and offer constructive ways to improve on the status quo. They didn't mind going on the attack when required but unlike the Liberals, didn't do it simply to "oppose".

I think the big winners today, after the people of the province, is the Liberal party itself.

They now have an opportunity to spend the next 4 years cleaning house, getting rid of the "Old Guard", bringing some new and fresh faces and ideas to the provincial stage and making a fresh start.

That's not a bad thing after what we've seen from them lately.
